RONAN STOOD AT CASSIE’S front door, cursing himself as a fool.
She’d run away from him as fast as she could, and here he was, chasing her. He’d just had to dig through a few documents to find her address. It was only so he could apologize properly—set the record straight—but still. This wasn’t one of his proudest moments.
On the last-minute flight he’d managed to snare, he’d frowned as the plane hit some serious turbulence on the way into Melbourne. According to the pilot, the heatwave was about to break—a storm front was moving in and heavy rain predicted. The bumpy ride didn’t bother him, but he hoped that Cassie’s flight had been smoother—or that someone sitting next to her had helped keep her calm. Maybe held her hand for her, talked to her.
He pictured another traveler—some anonymous businessman—with his fingers entwined with Cassie’s, stroking her wrist to soother her, just as he had. The air around him heated as if the sun had risen all over again. He muttered a curse under his breath, wrenched at his tie and pulled it free of his collar, stuffing it into a pocket.
He raised his fists to knock on the door, but hesitated for a moment. He was just going to clear the air—make sure things were understood between them—ensure there’d be no repercussions for Conroy Corporation as a result of his impetuous behavior.
And make sure she hadn’t been too shaken by the flight.
His knock sounded incredibly loud in the quiet suburban street. Twilight had come early, thanks to the portentous clouds hanging low in the sky, bringing with them the smell of rain.
Cassie’s face was the picture of surprise when she opened the door.
“But…I thought you were in Sydney?”
“Hello to you, too,” Ronan couldn’t help teasing.
She looked sleepy—he wondered if he’d woken her—and her already pink cheeks flushed darker at his quip.
“Hello, of course. Sorry, you just surprised me.”
“I changed my flight.” Duh. You’re a smart one, Conroy.
“Clearly.”
There was a moment of silence as they studied each other. Cassie wore soft jeans that hugged her every curve and an oversize pink T-shirt with a stretched-out neck that was slipping off, revealing the creamy skin of one shoulder and a coffee-colored bra strap. Her hair, pulled back as always, was messy, one long tendril hanging over her neck and curling down into her T-shirt.... No, probably not quite long enough to cover her whole breast. His fingers still itched to find out.
“I guess…you should come in,” Cassie said eventually, stepping back.
Ronan wasn’t sure how he felt about the hesitation in her voice. Disappointed? He should approve. No way should she be welcoming him into her home given the thoughts that were currently running rampant in his head.
“I won’t be long,” he promised, wondering at the same time if he was lying. “I just need a few minutes to talk to you.”
Cassie nodded. She closed the
